Public Art News

Washington, D.C., Capitol Hill Montessori School at Logan. We just returned from installing our first public art mosaic on the East Coast in the heart of urban D.C. It’s on a 40-foot-long exterior wall that embodies Montessori principles. That includes incorporating hand-made tile lettering of words provided by sixth-graders who answered, “When I grow up, I want to be a ...” After a string of professions (from architect to NBA player), the mosaic culminates with “I am ME.”

We couldn’t be happier with the response by students, staff and parents. It’s a huge honor being selected from a national art call to create such meaningful artwork. Check out the photos.

“I am ME!” 40-feet long x 3-feet high mosaic mural; ceramic tile, 98% recycled glass tile, and hand-made tile lettering.

The mosaic begins with a child blowing a dandelion whose seeds turn into words.

After sprinkling in the students' career aspirations, the mosaic ends with a sweet message.

We had to complete the installation over the weekend in cold rain. Thankfully, we brought a canopy and lights to work into the night.

On Monday morning, we arrived early to watch students interact with the artwork. They immediately began walking the full length of the mosaic, running their hands along the colors. Awesome visual and tactile engagement!

The mosaic is right-sized for students' eyes and safe for their hands.

But we also lost one: North Carolina State University. After going from 130 applicants to one of three finalists, and giving a big presentation, we weren’t selected. It would have been our largest work -- in size and budget -- to-date: A three-story mosaic of NC State “Wolfpack” pride in the new student wellness center. But we’re super proud of our design and the stellar collaborators we lined up to assist. We also got to see impressive public art on the NC State campus, much of it metal. Our mosaic would have been the University’s first, and Stacia one of few female artists represented in their collection. Heavy sigh.

Holy Moly: Work-in-Progress

Central Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, MN. Our work at this beautiful historic church is coming along. We finished a paschal candle in time for Easter. Now, we’re busy adding thousands of delicate mosaic tile to a large baptismal font carved from Cold Spring granite. The work is slow and meticulous; two bowls finished, one to go. Then we start on 35 floor inlays. This is a great collaboration with St. Paul Fabricating and Decorating (liturgical space experts).

This mosaic paschal candle features tiny, decorative mosaic tile with carved wood trim.

Mosaicking the baptismal bowls requires acrobatic moves and a ton of patience.

When finished, water will flow between the three massive bowls.

In the News

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has once again been named as the best airport for its size in North America. MSP also received that recognition in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The commitment to public art made by the Metropolitan Airports Commission and its Arts at MSP program is truly incredible.

We installed our two Northern Lights mosaic murals in 2016 (Humphrey Terminal, near gate H12).
